How parking works in Denmark

Danish cities split street parking into three kinds, and the sign at the start of the street tells you which one you are in:

• Paid parking ("Betaling" or a P-sign with a zone and hours). You register the plate and pay per hour in an app, at a machine or by phone. Traffic wardens check the plate against the register, so nothing goes in the window.
• Free with a time limit (a P-sign with "1 time", "2 timer" or "3 timer" and a clock symbol). Parking costs nothing, but you must show a parking disc.
• Free without a limit. Common outside city centres. Local signs still apply, and a yellow line along the kerb means you may not park or stop there.

Private car parks, supermarket lots and garages run on their own terms. The sign at the entrance says how to pay, and they fine under their own rules rather than traffic law.

The parking disc (p-skive)

The parking disc catches out more visitors than anything else, because free parking still needs one. Set the disc to the next quarter hour after you arrive: arrive at 13:07 and you set it to 13:15. Place it inside the windscreen where it can be read from outside. You may not move the dial while the car stays in the same place.

Most Danish rental cars have a disc in the glovebox or stuck to the windscreen. If yours does not, ask at the rental desk before you drive off; petrol stations also sell them.

Paying with a rental car

A car rented in Denmark has a Danish plate, usually two letters and five digits. That plate is what you register, not your own car at home. The most common mistake with a rental car is using a plate saved from an earlier trip, so check the plate in the app against the car each time.

Any Danish parking app works with a foreign phone and a foreign card. You do not need MitID, a Danish phone number or a Danish address. Copenhagen

Central Copenhagen has four paid zones. Since 1 April 2025 you pay every day of the week, including Sundays.

• Weekend hour: from Saturday 17:00 to Monday 08:00, and on public holidays, the first hour of your first registered parking is free. You still have to register it, or you can be fined.
• Free parking: 17 outer districts have time-limited zones where you park free for up to 3 hours on weekdays with a disc, and without a limit at weekends. See free parking in Copenhagen.

Frederiksberg

Frederiksberg sits in the middle of Copenhagen but is its own municipality with its own rules. Parking is free from Saturday 17:00 to Monday 07:00 and on public holidays, with no registration. On weekdays the first hour costs 10 kr. and the price rises each hour after that. You can see Frederiksberg on the FreeSpot map, but you cannot pay there in FreeSpot yet; use the machine or one of the apps named on the sign.

Aarhus

Aarhus has a red and a yellow street zone. Both cost 25 kr. an hour on weekdays 08:00-19:00 and 11 kr. from 19:00 to 23:00. On Saturdays it is 25 kr. until 16:00 and 11 kr. after that. Street parking is free on Sundays and public holidays.

In the yellow zone the first two hours are free, but only if you register the car in an app or at a machine. A parking disc is not enough here, which is the opposite of Copenhagen's time-limited zones. The Aarhus parking map shows the zones and the free streets around them. Aalborg

Aalborg city centre mixes paid municipal parking with free and time-limited streets a short walk out. You can pay for the municipal paid spaces in FreeSpot, and the Aalborg parking map shows which streets are free.

Which parking app to use

The hourly price is set by the municipality and is the same whichever app you use. The apps differ in two ways: the service fee they add, and the towns they cover. The City of Copenhagen points out that the fees differ, so check the fee before your first parking.

Five mistakes that lead to fines

1. No disc in a time-limited zone. Free parking still needs the disc.
2. Not registering the "free" time. Copenhagen's weekend hour and Aarhus' two yellow-zone hours only count when registered.
3. The wrong plate in the app. Check it against the rental car every time.
4. Assuming Sunday is free in Copenhagen. It has not been since April 2025.
5. Parking in a private lot on municipal rules. Supermarket and hotel lots have their own signs and their own fines.
